ROONEY CAN DO IT

Why Wayne Rooney can fire Manchester United to the Premier League title this season

Wayne Rooney is one of the best strikers to feature in the Premier League and will lead the line for Louis van Gaal's side this campaign. The Red Devils, who lifted the title back in 2013, finished fourth last term and will be aiming to finish at the top of the division for the 20th time in their illustrious history.

Rooney, who is United's captain, could play a key role in their success this season. He will be looking to emulate his individual performances from the 2009-10 and 2011-12 seasons when the England international scored 26 and 27 league goals respectively.

Rooney will be hungry for success and, after two barren years without a major trophy, he will be hoping to motivate his side for a serious title challenge.

The former Everton striker has scored more than 10 goals in each of his 11 previous years in the Premier League and will be looking to find the net at least 15 times as the focal point of United's strikeforce. Rooney is 9/1 with betfair on the brink of the season to finish as the division's top scorer and his goals will be crucial if Van Gaal's men are to challenge for the crown.

With the likes of Juan Mata, Memphis Depay and Ander Herrera in the side, Rooney could benefit from an abundance of creativity in the midfield. The striker is likely to play on his own in attack but may see a hatful of chances fall his way if United can create opportunities.

The England international currently sits third on United's all-time top goalscorers list, just 19 goals behind Sir Bobby Charlton's longstanding record of 249. It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see Rooney become England's highest ever goalscorer as well as Manchester United's highest scorer and lead the Red Devils to their 14th Premier League success.
