DEFOE SET TO EXIT SUNDERLAND THIS SUMMER

Premier League side Sunderland are set to lose their top striker Jermain Defoe as they relegate to the Championship at the end of the current term.

The manager of the club David Moyes has hinted at interests already rolling in for the signature of the player.

West Bromich Albion are already being linked to the player as coach Tony Pulis suggested that they could make a move for the Three Lions star. Sunderland netted just 26 times in the league this season and Defoe scored over half of the goals. The 34-year old, at some point in the season, went on a brilliant run that helped the club and earned his recall to the England national side.

“Jermaine Defoe has a clause in his contract so it’s possible,” Moyes said in response to questions if the player would exit the Black Cats set-up this summer.

Pulis hinted that West Brom wanted the player and that being a free agent is a plus. However, he added that his wages was still a cost to consider and that there were other players they were considering.

Aside West Brom other Premier League sides could be ready to sign him. He was linked to West Ham and Bournemouth in January but the deal did not eventually happen. With Defoe having the 2018 World Cup at the back of his head, he would seek clubs that would give him enough play time. And The Cherries are the likely choice.

With Newcastle and Brighton joining the big boys, Defoe represents the needed experience. Either manager that snaps him can decide to play two upfront of tweak the attack to what works. Defoe might not be the ideal lone striker that can excel in the Premier League, so aside a top striker Defoe can be the support or a high impact substitute.
